New Orleans 2008

At last the school year has come to an end!  Sadly this means that our graduating seniors will move on and will be missed by man, especially the youth group, but we still have some time to spend with them.

Of course, the youth group this summer is largely focused on the upcoming mission trip.  Again we're going to New Orleans.  This time we'll be gone from July 18-27, adn we'll be taking the train from Champaign, IL, to New Orleans.  It is sure to be exciting.

Some aspects of our trip will be familiar....Fortunatly the situation after Hurrican Katrina has progressed a little, and mostly the demolition and gutting work on damaged homes has been completed.  So this trip will be focused largely on rebuilding the historic city of New Orleans.

Leading up to that time we still have some time to prepare.  Our next big event is the Parish Garage Sale, which is our largest fundraiser, on June 14th.  This year, Gigi Nicholas has agreed to organize and coordinate the event, but we still need lots of youth help.  The week beforehand we'll need older youth to help transport items to the church and to move things around the church to their appropraite room, as well as sorting and pricing items.

On Friday June 13, we'll need a few youth to help run a Parish Preview, when parishioners can come to peruse the sale ahead of time.  We'll need as many youth as possible to help with this, probably in shifts.  The sale will run from 8am-4pm, and wee need workers to set up an hour beforehand and take down an hour afterwards.  Likely, we'll also need poeple the Monday or Tuesday after to help move leftover items out.

Then we'll try to have a fun, non-fundraising activity, on June 21st.  We'll try to make up our youth night out, doing dinner and a movie.

On July 16th, we'll gather together at the church for a Youth Commissioning Service to ask God's blessing on the mission trip.  We'll also have an ice cream social as part of that night.

Stay tuned.  There's lots of great things ahead!
