Lee on Sanborn Organ

Lee Barlow has served as the organist and choirmaster at St. Francis Episcopal Church since 1999. He studied organ and church music under Donald D. Kilmer at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. During his Millsaps tenure, Lee accompanied the Millsaps Troubadors, Millsaps Singers and various voice students. He won first place in the MMTA Freshman/Sophomore organ division in 1983 and represented the Jackson chapter of the AGO in the regional Young Organists Competition in 1985.

On Palm Sunday in 1983, as he was on his way to the Methodist church, his bike accidentally pedaled down the street on which his organ teacher's Episcopal church resided. The rest was history: he became a die-hard Episcopalian in June, 1985. He graduated in 1986 and received a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance and the Millsaps Senior Music Award.

Lee continued organ studies under Dr. Larry Smith at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. He also sang in the Trinity Episcopal Church choir in Bloomington under the direction of Marilyn Keiser. He earned a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance with a cognate in early music and was awarded the Performer's Certificate.

In addition to serving our parish, Lee serves as assistant organist at St. Luke Catholic Church in Indianapolis. From 2008 to 2011, he served as organist and choirmaster for the St. John Bosco Latin Mass (Tridentine) Community in Carmel.

He has taught on the faculty for the annual Indianapolis Student Organ Encounter since 2003.  Additionally, he teaches Musik Garten  for Babies and Toddlers (music classes for ages 0-3) and private piano and organ lessons. He is thrilled that all his students he has entered in the National Piano Playing Auditions since June 2010 have ranked Superior or Superior-Plus. He is a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians, the American Guild of Organists and the National Guild of Piano Teachers.
